Les Contes d`Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann) is the last work of Jacques Offenbach, and also one of his masterpieces. The opera tells of bizarre love stories between Hoffman, modeled on German poet Hoffmann von Fallersleben, with three women. His romances all end in tragedy, and he grew so sad that he eventually devoted himself to art and poetry. Billed as one of Offenbach’s most beautiful operas, Les Contes d`Hoffmann features several popular songs including Doll’s Song and Barcarolle. Its stage design is simply superb. The National Center of the Performing Arts invited American Francesca Zambello to direct the opera. Zambello is known for her reali. In 2011 she directed Carmen for the Ncpa to wide acclaim.

In 1935, Mantovani established Mantovani and His Orchestra, a large orchestra with hey string representation. By the 1950s it had become a leader in the emerging“light music” style.
