摘要：老子所著《道德经》不仅是一部有着丰厚内涵和深刻哲理的道家经典，而且是一部用语精炼、辞意隽永的哲理诗。其中体现的老子的思想智慧不仅是中华民族的思想和文化的重要组成部分，而且对世界上其他国家也产生了深远的影响。《道德经》在西方世界的影响力光以译本的数量就能看出，其被翻译的频率和发行总数仅次于《圣经》和《薄伽梵歌》，共有130多个英文译本，是被翻译的最多的中国典籍。无疑，《道德经》的翻译推动了道家文化在英语世界的广泛传播。探讨《道德经》在英语世界的成功翻译与传播，可为中国其他典籍的翻译与传播提供一定的参考，进而推动中国其他文化在英语世界的传播。这就是本论文选取“《道德经》在英语世界的翻译与传播”为探讨课题的理由。纵观以往对《道德经》的探讨，其大多集中在对几种翻译文本做语言层面上的比较，以中浅析不同的翻译技艺和对策，但以跨文化传播的角度探讨《道德经》的很少。本论文试图采取文化传播论述—模因论—阐述《道德经》在英语世界的翻译与传播历程。模因论是关于人类文化的进化论——它以模因为单位探讨信息传播的进化方式。本论文以模因的视角，根据模因的传播复制规律对道家文化模因借助翻译进行传播的现象和历程进行探讨和阐述。
